Choose a current event, news item, or issue that you feel strongly about and make a piece that addresses it. Think of it as an interactive, algorithmic documentary.

Pick one of the following options (channel branding, film title design, commercial or haiku) and make an animation, minimum 30 seconds.

For this project, I created a film title design for the movie, Marie Antoinette.

Create a simulation. It should have objects that interact with the user and each other in some way.

I created a program where two similar flocking systems follow the mouse (attractor). Each vector is controlled through cohesion, attraction and separation forces.

Create a kinetic type piece on GMOs (genetically modified organisms). Be convincing and support your argument with facts. 15-30 seconds.

Fish or Frankenfish?
aka Genetically Modified salmon.
The salmon’s added genes allow it to grow twice as fast as its wild relative…
18 versus 30 months.
If the FDA approves, it will be the first genetically manipulated animal allowed for human consumption in the US.
The FDA claims that GM salmon “is as safe as regular salmon” but there are currently NO human health safety tests being conducted.
So in effect, WE are the experiment.
And what will happen when Frankenfish escape into the greater environment??
Today it’s a fish, but very soon it will be a genetically engineered pig, cow or chicken…
Do you want salmon to become a commercially-available GM species?
And if so, will you eat it?
Stay informed.

This project explores Interface as a connector between people in socially mobile environments and in the process aims to understand how people interact with one another. Working in a collaborative partnership, you will choose a space that you feel has inherent meaning in its architecture, history, use, or current cultural significance. As observers, you will be paying attention to modes of interaction within your chosen space, noting social, personal, and cultural behaviors. The goal is to study what conditions and environments allow for fruitful interactions to occur.

Pick an adjective and make a program that illustrates that adjective interactively.

My adjective: INFINITY

I created a simple program, consisting of 2 separate vector fields that rotate in opposite directions.

You will be required to produce 5 projects in 5 consecutive days. Even though the project cycle is short, the creative potential is high. Each piece should be a stand-alone accomplishment, but it may be possible that the suite of projects will show a process of creative evolution, or variations on a theme that you will define.

Determine your own parameters. You will begin by defining a creative constraint that provides a rich opportunity to explore a topic or theme. You can use your experience from the previous mapping project as inspiration to begin the process. The constraints must reflect your vision and point of view and should reflect an internal logic. It can be as simple as a spectrum of colors, the number and names of subway stops from your home to school, the initials of your classmates’ first and last names in this class, the verbs in the first paragraph of this sheet, etc., as well as found media and information from the internet –the goal is to open yourself to collecting random subjects that you can mine for creative experiments leading to some form of interactivity.

I based my 5 projects around random conversations I heard while riding the subway.
